Marinaquip Pile Rings

Pile Ring is an innovative device that provides constant and automatic line adjustment. The Pile Ring has been designed specifically to overcome weather and tidal mooring problems experienced by marina operators and boat owners alike.

Revolutionary floating mooring system

They not only take care of the hour by hour and day by day adjustments required for changes in tide and water levels but are also on hand in the event of unpredictable and potentially disastrous weather bombs, tidal surges and flash floods which effect coastal and inland waterways and lakes from time to time. Pile Ring sits on the surface of the water around a mooring pile. Mooring ropes from your boat or craft are tied to the Pile Ring instead of the pile. The Pile Ring floats up and down the mooring pile at the same rate as your boat or craft and as such never needs adjusting. Your boat will always have tight and/or perfectly adjusted lines.

Pile Ring FAQs

Pile Ring is a floating mooring device which sits on the surface of the water about a mooring pile. Mooring ropes from your boat, craft or device are tied to the Pile Ring instead of the pile. The Pile Ring floats up and down the mooring pile at the same rate as your boat or craft and as such never needs adjusting. Your boat will always have tight and/or perfectly adjusted lines even in high tides, bad weather or storm surges. You need never be caught out again.

Pile Rings take all the worry and anguish out of mooring your boat when there is the potential for inclement weather, sudden flooding, tidal anomalies, and storm surges as there is no need to tend to the lines. They are always at the right length and tension no matter what the situation. They also help to solve issues associated with berthing and docking maneuvers where wind and tide can cause sudden unexpected movement.

Pile Rings can be used to safely moor any floating boat, yacht, craft, vessel or equipment (e.g. Floating Solar Power) in any state of tide, current, weather or flood without the need for constant attention, monitoring or adjustment (within the constraints, limitations and heights of the pilings themselves).

The mooring line from the Pile Ring to your boat should be tight but not so tight that the Pile Ring starts to pull out of the water. It should remain properly afloat in a horizontal position. This provides “give” in the rope and allows the boat to ride with the waves, currents and movement of the water comfortably. As such it does not put undue strain on any ropes or marine hardware. It also ensures that the Pile Ring is not forcibly worn on one side against the piling.

N.B. Pile Rings are not designed for use on square concrete pilings as the sharp and abrasive concrete corners will wear into the polyethylene.

Single Pile Rings are rotationally moulded from high-quality virgin polyethylene (plastic) which is super strong and tough and almost indestructible. A single welded high grade 304 marine stainless steel hoop is inserted into the polyethylene float at time of moulding and this cannot be pulled out. The float is then filled with a closed cell polyurethane foam so that in the unlikely event of a puncture or leak or damage then the pile ring will still not sink.

N.B. 316 stainless steel is not used for our integrated hoop as it is not as strong as our particular grade of 304 stainless steel under these mooring conditions. The surface may display a tea-stain over time but it will not rust for a considerable number of years.

Multi-Piece Pile Rings are made using our unique grade of rotationally moulded polymer and are designed to flex a little to provide maximum strength.

We commissioned independent bollard pull tests for our multi-piece Pile Rings to a sustained 20 tonnes. The rings maintained their integrity and performance. They do flex and distort under immense pressure but no damage at all was recorded.

We have tested the single piece Pile Ring to 3 tonnes (6000lbs) direct pull using an accurate Load Cell device. To give you some idea of how strong this is – your Ropes and your actual Piles are far more likely to break before the Pile Ring gets anywhere near its maximum load.

N.B. It is not the weight of the boat that counts but the pressure exerted on the ropes, pile and Pile Ring.

Pile Ring comes in five sizes:

  • PR350-2 which has approximately 350mm (13 7/8“) inside diameter
  • PR400 which has approximately 400mm (15 ½“) inside diameter
  • PR475-2 which has approximately 475mm (18 3/4“) inside diameter
  • PR550 which has approximately 550mm (21 ½“) inside diameter
  • PR750-4 which has approximately 750mm (29 ½“) inside diameter

N.B. Please make sure to measure your pilings at all states of tide before ordering and if in any doubt then please contact us for further guidance.

Our Pile Rings are made from high quality, high grade materials and under normal usage and circumstances they should easily be lasting over ten years. Studies in New Zealand have shown many earlier designs to have lasted longer than twenty years. Please see our warranty terms and conditions for further information.

Pile Rings themselves do not require any maintenance, however, due to the localised nature and veracity of marine biofouling in your area it may be necessary to clean the Pile Ring from time to time. Our high quality polyethylene is impenetrable to marine biofouling and does not require any anti-fouling treatment, however, slime, weed, barnacles, mussels, oysters, etc. can attach themselves over time as with any other submerged surface. It is suggested that you inspect your Pile Rings regularly to check for marine growth. If the growth is heavy it will need scraping, cleaning, or water blasting to maintain the correct buoyancy, floatation and of course appearance.
